So if you follow me on social media, I’m sure you know that Eek! has unfortunately closed. I’m going to be positive, and not talk about how sad this is and how much I’ll miss everything. Instead I’m going to tell you the things I’m really enjoying at the minute and what’s getting me over this hump.
I have to have this first, even though it’s stupid. The Saints Row games are sort of like Grand Theft Auto, only they’re more stupid, and a lot more enjoyable because there’s an ‘easy’ setting. (I hate games which don’t give you a choice of easy, medium and hard. I will always enjoy games more if I can put it on an easy setting, because it means I’m more likely to not get frustrated and stop playing – when will games designers realise they will sell more games with more difficulty settings? Anyway, that’s sidetracking…)
In this latest installment, you start as the President of the USA, a position you’ve reached after being a gang leader in the previous games. Aliens invade the earth, and the point of the game is to survive the simualtion the aliens have put you into and try to escape it, and save your friends and the world in the process. What this means is you have SUPER POWERS, as well as the usual stupid guns, to kill people with. Professor Genki is still around (he’s a giant headed cat who pays you to get through his assault course) and there’s still the usual things like racing, stealing cars, killing targets etc, only now it’s framed as ‘disrupting the system’.
As usual, I’m a fat lady in a mini dress covered in tattoos, only this time my rocket launcher looks like an ice cream. This has given me hours of joy in a tough week.
A podcast based in the fictional town of Night Vale, which is framed as a news reporter doing his radio programme. As such, it’s a really interesting concept, and as it’s all descriptive, and all through the eyes of one person, you get a really fascinating view of what’s going on. At first, you’ll wonder what the hell is actually happening, but as it progresses, you get to know certain characters, and you start to root for Cecil and Carlos.
Black cherry flavoured bourbon. Goes lovely in coke. Has lasted a lot longer than bottles of spirits usually do.
It took us ages to start watching this, because it didn’t appeal at all. We eventually started watching it after 3 episodes, and we devoured them all in one go because it’s JUST. SO. GOOD. It’s common knowledge that Matthew McConaughey is having a renaissance in his acting career, and it’s also nice to see people realising that Woody Harrelson is also a great character actor.
If you haven’t heard of it, or seen it, it’s about two detectives working together on a strange case in 1995 – it’s told in flashback from the present day, and jumps around the timeline a lot. Working out how the charaters got from where they were to where they are is one facet of the mystery which runs alongside working out who actually committed the murder they’re investigating.
